Orest Pilskalns / CEO

Dr. Orest Pilskalns is a pioneer in mapping technology. With degrees in Mathematics and Physics and an MS in Computer Science, he worked initially with Lockheed Martin Astronautics, developing mapping and image recognition software for the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), before completing his computer science Ph.D at WSU. WSU recruited Orest as a computer science professor where he founded mapwith.us in 2008 with a grant from the Washington Research Foundation; he developed and patented groundbreaking mobile and internet-based mapping technology and went on to found Skyfish in 2014. Since then, Skyfish has built a comprehensive drone hardware and software platform for the precise measuring of critical infrastructure and to carry and operate unique payloads.

William Bain / Principal Software Engineer

Will Bain, a former classmate of Dr. Pilskalns, joined Skyfish as Lead Software Engineer in 2016. With degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering and an MS in Computer Science, Will played a key role in the development of our onboard computer, Skymind™. Prior to Skyfish, Will invented Visual Learning System, a machine learning software tool for quickly and accurately distinguishing between volcanic and impact craters in NASA’s Magellan imagery of the planet Venus. This led to Target Analyst, a software tool kit for ground vehicle detection and tracking from aircraft, and Fire Analyst, a software tool kit for real-time detection of fire and smoke in surveillance video feeds on US Navy vessels.

Dan Reed / Operations

Dan founded RC Heli Nation in 2007, an industry-specific podcast that covered technical news related to drones and RC helicopters. RC Heli Nation had weekly listeners in over 100 countries, mostly hobbyists and military personnel. The podcast had approximately 40,000 downloads per month. Dan participated in talks with the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) and FAA regarding future drone regulation. Dan Reed has demonstrated his passion for drones as an RC pilot and hobbyist since 1988. Dan is part of the drone industry fabric, with a deep peer network, he brings extensive experience, industry knowledge, and technical understanding from both the vendor and end-user perspectives.

Wesley Cratty / Quality Assurance & Lead Software Integration Manager

Wesley ensures overall adherence to our mission statement and that Skyfish software meets or exceeds the high standards that we require. With degrees in mathematics and computer science from the University of Montana, Wesley’s days at Skyfish are filled with root cause analysis, writing test plans, collaborating with our software engineers, and maintaining code and user experience quality. Wesley retains a global understanding of Skyfish goals, hardware, and software to facilitate integration for our customers. He bridges Skyfish and our customers by communicating and understanding customer intent and informing the direction of departments accordingly. When he is not at the office, Wesley enjoys woodworking and other hands-on creative projects.

Bart Claessens / Hardware Engineering Manager

Bart specializes in electrical design, R&D, and signal processing. Bart leads the development and programming of Skyfish’s custom electronics, including our motherboard, remote controller, and base station board. Bart holds a degree in applied physics from Fontys University of Technology, where he double minored in computer science and new technology’s smart materials. Before joining Skyfish, Bart helped develop an automatic braking system for smart cars, inks for next generation industrial inkjet printers, and experimental set-up for plasma cleaning of X-ray tubes in vacuum.

Compliance

Is your drone made in the United States?

Yes. Skyfish Drones are made in America. We design, manufacture, and test our Drones at our Stevensville, Montana HQ and provide local support to satisfy your security standards.

Are Skyfish Drones federal government and NDAA Sec. 848 compliant?

Yes. Skyfish Drones comply with Congress and DoD supply chain standards and is NDAA sec. 848 compliant.

Is Skyfish FAA Drone Zone compliant?

Yes. Skyfish complies with FAA Drone Zone; we lead our customers and Train the Trainer participants (107 Pilots) through the FAA Drone Zone commercial UAV registration process.

Is Skyfish ITAR sec. 126.1 compliant?

Yes. Skyfish is ITAR sec. 126.1 compliant; we ship our UAVs to countries with which the United States does not have a policy of denial of trade.

Can I travel on airline with my Skyfish Drone?

Yes. Skyfish M-Series drones are checked-in luggage.

Are my batteries airline travel safe?

Skyfish sells batteries that are compliant (UN38.3 certified safe for airline travel) and batteries that are not compliant for a lower cost.

What type of batteries does Skyfish use?

Skyfish uses custom made Li-Ion smart batteries.

How do I properly care for my drone batteries?
If I live outside the United States, can I buy Skyfish products?

Skyfish will ship to any countries not restricted by international arms trade agreements.

What features does your flight planning software have? Is it customizable to different use cases?

Our flight planning software, Skyfish Mission Control™, covers all pre-, during-, and post-flight tasks and is highly customizable to different industry workflows. Our customers use Mission Control™ to survey grids and terrains, select unlimited waypoints and POIs, geo-tag photos, cache and manage maps, modify flight details on-the-go, create and manage checklists and user templates, store and manage flight logs and geo-PDF map overlays, and more.

Is it possible to customize the Mission Control™ UI for my industry?

Yes, we can quickly configure our software to meet your specific needs.

What software platforms do you integrate with?

Skyfish integrates with Bentley software for photogrammetry and 3D modeling, Pix4D software for photogrammetry and drone mapping, miscellaneous photogrammetry software, and miscellaneous geo-tagging software.

How does Skyfish accommodate custom payloads?

What type of accessories and sensors does the Skyfish drone platform support?

Skyfish supports Gremsy gimbals and anything that attaches to them, Sony Alpha series of cameras, Sony QX series of cameras, FLiR cameras and a variety of thermal imaging equipment, RICO, LiDAR, emissions systems, infrared cameras, robotics equipment, and very specific payloads.

Does Skyfish offer custom software/firmware integration of various accessories or sensors?

Our onboard computer, Skymind™, allows us to integrate almost any type of sensor and appropriate drivers. Skyfish will contact the manufacturer of the sensor of your choice to acquire engineering drawings and design your drones accordingly. Skyfish engineers will ensure easy integration from a hardware and software perspective and get you the best results.

Does Skyfish offer custom hardware fabrication for mounting various accessories and sensors?

Yes. Our machine shop can create custom mounts as required. For more detail, please send us a message.

As technology improves, can I upgrade my unit?

Yes. Our drone platform is built in modules, so we can update your drone as required.

What is the most you’ve ever lifted with the M6?

The Skyfish M6 is a serious machine. It can lift up to 20 lbs, easy. If you require heavier payloads, Skyfish can design a power system for you. Send us a message for more details.

What is the maximum flight distance from point to point?

The M4 and M6 drones maximum flight distance from point to point is 7.5 miles (12 km).

How do I access flight logs?

What comes with my Skyfish UAS?

Each Skyfish drone comes with: The Skyfish drone platform, 2 sets of flight batteries, charger and charging case, power supply (battery or generator), Pelican™ travel case, Skyfish remote controller, RTK GPS, propellers (2 sets of 4 for the M4 drone and 2 sets of 6 for the M6 drone), landing gear, repair kit, user manual, and more (depending on customer specs).

How do I get started with my Skyfish drone?

What does RTK stand for?

RTK stands for Real Time Kinematics, which allows you to adjust your position in real time and does differential analysis of the signal.

Is there a lower cost option?

Yes, but with reduced features and functionality.

The maintenance schedule for your Skyfish purchase involves post-flight inspections, monthly bearing inspection, propeller replacing every 6 months or sooner, motor rebuild (bearing kit) every 6 months.

The projected lifetime for your Skyfish Drone is 2 years with regular maintenance.

Level 2/3 support, feature requests, and new functionality upgrades are available at a customization cost as you require. Skyfish can offer customization services for the entire craft because we support all of the technology from the bottom of the landing gear to the top of the GPS antenna.
