With aeronautical and mapping platform experience going back over 20 years, Dr. Orest Pilskalns founded SkyFish in 2014 after identifying significant automated mapping opportunities in the commercial drone industry.

Dr. Pilskalns’ previous company, mapwith.us, developed and patented ground-breaking mapping technology, starting in 2008. His vision for Skyfish’s unique modular UAV platform brought together ground and flight control software, drone and sensors, along with the main data sensor platform. The result is a stunning aerial robotics platform that you can quickly customize and control for your specific needs.

Meet the seasoned team behind our unique mapping sensor platform

Dr. Orest Pilskalns, CEO

Dr. Orest Pilskalns is a world pioneer in mapping technology. With degrees in Mathematics and Physics and an MS in Computer Science, he worked initally with Lockheed Martin Aeronatics, developing mapping and image recognition software for the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), before completing his Ph.D at WSU.

Founding mapwith.us in 2008 with a grant from the Washington Research Foundation, Dr. Pilskalns developed and patented ground breaking mobile and internet-based mapping technology and went on to found Skyfish in 2014. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength, developing mission planning software Skycontrol, along with our unique onboard computer, Skynode.

William Bain, Lead Software Engineer

Will Bain, a former classmate of Dr. Pilskalns, joined Skyfish as Lead Software Engineer in 2016. With degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering and an MS in Computer Science, Will played a key role in the development of our unique onboard computer, Skynode.

Prior to Skyfish, Will invented Visual Learning System, a machine learning software tool for quickly and accurately distinguishing between volcanic and impact craters in NASA’s Magellan imagery of the planet Venus. This led to Target Analyst, a software tool kit for ground vehicle detection and tracking from aircraft, and Fire Analyst, a software tool kit for real-time detection of fire and smoke in surveillance video feeds on US Navy vessels.
